With the wide open spaces above the snowline,Garhwal and Kumaon offer yet another exciting possibility-ski touring amongst the glaciers. For the avid skier,crosscountry runs of 10-20km are now available ,with the added advantage of fresh powder snow, away from criss-crossing streams of the European Alps. Because of their height and spread,Garhwal and Kumaon,like other sectors of the Himalayas, are in a position to offer the thrills of exploratory long distance skiing round the year. In fact, as long as ten years ago, a ski-descent was made from the summit of Trisul(7,120 m) by the Italians Alberto Re and Ezio Laboria on October 14,1978.Winter skiing in Garhwal is now being professionally run at the Auli slopes 12 km above Joshimat which is 255 km from Rishikesh.The normal season os January to March,depending on the snow conditions.The runs are upto 3 km in length and offer fine views of the peaks of the Nanda Devi sanctury and kamet group.An annual 2 day All India Open Ski Championship is also arranged here by the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam.Boarding,lodging and equipment are provided on rent with arrangement for slalom, downfall and cross-country events. Auli is 16 KM from Josimath and accessible by a good motorable road, is an ideal ski resort with its slopes comparable to the best in the world. The resort is run by GMVN, which apart form providing accommodation also organizes all facilities for skiing. The season extends from January to March during which time skiing festivals and the national championships are held. Adding to the thrill of skiing is a 180 degrees view of Himalayan peaks which include Nanda Devi, Kamet, Mana Paravat and Dunagiri. The conditions for skiing are perfect. Skiers can enjoy almost 20km of virgin slopes which provide excellent opportunities for crosscountry,slalom and down hill skiing events. |
